First Merchants Bank customers can use online or mobile banking to transfer funds, retrieve statements and manage eligible debit cards. The bank publishes one routing number, 074900657, but the user should still confirm the transfer type and destination before submitting any banking instruction. This independent guide is not affiliated with First Merchants Bank.
The main job is to choose the correct movement method. An internal transfer, external transfer, wire and direct deposit may all involve bank accounts, yet they use different screens, verification steps and processing rules.
What Is the First Merchants Routing Number?
First Merchants Bank lists its routing number as 074900657 on its contact page and routing-number FAQ.
A routing number identifies the bank involved in a U.S. payment instruction. Customers may encounter it while setting up direct deposit, incoming payments or other account services.
Use the number only after confirming that the form actually requests a First Merchants routing number.
Do not confuse it with:
- a personal account number
- a debit-card number
- an online-banking Login ID
- a wire beneficiary account
- an international SWIFT identifier
Those fields serve different purposes.
For an incoming domestic wire, First Merchants also publishes routing and transit number 074900657, along with instructions to provide the beneficiaryโs own account number. Incoming wires have a published same-day credit cutoff of 6:00 p.m. Eastern.
Do this first: identify whether the sender is arranging ACH, direct deposit or a wire. Skip copying one set of instructions into a different transfer form.
How Do External Transfers Work?
First Merchants describes external transfers as transfers between a personal customerโs eligible First Merchants deposit account and a deposit account at another financial institution.
In the mobile workflow, the bankโs instructional material directs users to:
More โ Pay & Transfer โ Manage External Accounts.
The user can then add an external institution through the available verification route. First Merchantsโ FAQ says external-account setup may require confirmation of two small deposits made to the outside account before transfers can begin.
That verification step is easy to misread.
The two deposits are not customer payments, refunds or interest. They are test amounts used to establish that the user can view and control the external account.
Wait for both amounts to appear. Enter them exactly where the First Merchants service requests them, and do not send the amounts to another person.
A broader terms page says personal Mobile and Online Banking customers with eligible deposit accounts may use external transfers, excluding sole proprietors and business customers from that personal service.
Business users should not assume that the consumer external-transfer screen is their correct route.
Internal Transfers Are Different
An internal transfer moves funds between eligible accounts held at First Merchants. The bank says a Once, now transfer affects the available balance and appears in account history immediately as a pending item. Transfers entered after 9:00 p.m. settle on the next business day.
That creates two visible moments:
| Stage | What the user may see |
|---|---|
| Transfer submitted | Available balance changes; pending item appears |
| Settlement | Transfer completes according to the business-day timing |
A pending label does not necessarily mean the transfer failed.
Check both accounts before repeating the action. A second attempt could move the amount twice.
Short section. Important distinction.
Internal transfers, external transfers and wires should never be treated as interchangeable merely because each moves money.
Direct Deposit and Early Pay
Customers setting up direct deposit generally need the bank routing number and their correct deposit-account information. First Merchants provides a direct-deposit help page and promotes an Early Pay service for qualifying deposits.
First Merchants says Early Pay can make an eligible payroll or other qualifying direct deposit available up to two business days early. The service operates automatically for qualifying deposits, without a separate enrollment action.
Early access is not promised for every paycheck.
The bank states that timing depends on how and when the employer or payer submits the deposit and how the payment is identified. A deposit that does not meet the criteria arrives on the regular payment date.
This is the practical friction: one paycheck may arrive early while the next one does not.
Do not immediately change the routing information when an expected Early Pay deposit arrives on the ordinary payday. Confirm that the normal direct deposit posted correctly and ask the employer whether its payroll submission timing changed.
Deposit alerts can help. First Merchants instructs app users to open More โ Settings โ Alert Settings โ New Alert, then choose a History Alert for account credit transactions.
Priority statement: confirm the actual posted deposit first, skip treating Early Pay as a fixed contractual payday.
How Do I Find First Merchants eStatements?
Personal customers can enroll through the First Merchants mobile app or Personal Online Banking.
The documented route is:
Account Services โ eDocument Preferences โ edit icon โ eStatement โ accept the service agreement.
Once a new statement is produced, it appears under Account Services โ eDocument. First Merchants says eStatements remain available in the online archive for up to 18 months.
Business navigation differs. The bankโs materials place business eStatements under View eStatements in the Reports area, and business enrollment can discontinue paper statements for all owners, signers and administrators associated with that delivery choice.
That is a consequential setting.
A business administrator should not switch delivery casually without understanding that the selection may affect other authorized people.
Do this first: download any older statement that the business needs before it approaches the 18-month archive limit. Skip relying on the online archive as permanent storage.
Transaction history and statement history also differ. First Merchants says users may see at least 90 days of ordinary transaction history while retaining 18 months of eStatement history.
A missing older transaction may therefore still be available inside its monthly statement.
Debit Card Controls in the Mobile App
First Merchants provides debit-card controls within its mobile application. Customers can turn a card on or off, manage transaction types, set dollar thresholds, restrict merchant categories and create alerts.
Available alert categories include online purchases, mail or phone orders, recurring payments, ATM use, in-store transactions, international activity and transactions exceeding a selected amount.
The controls answer two separate needs:
- Controls can allow or block selected activity.
- Alerts notify the customer when selected activity occurs.
Turning on an alert does not necessarily block the purchase. Setting a transaction threshold control may cause a transaction above that amount to be declined.
Review which setting was selected.
A customer expecting a decline may have enabled only a notification, while another expecting an alert may have configured a hard threshold.
Does Turning Off the Card Stop Everything?
No.
First Merchants says most transactions are denied while a debit card is disabled, but established recurring payments using that card number may continue processing.
That detail matters after a card is misplaced.
Turning the card off can reduce new purchase activity, but it should not be treated as a permanent cancellation or a guarantee that every subscription charge will stop.
Use the card control immediately when the card is temporarily missing. Contact First Merchants when fraud is suspected or the card cannot be recovered.
The bank lists 1.800.205.3464 for card-control questions and fraud reporting.
For a replacement debit card, First Merchants directs customers to a local banking center. A reorder can be requested through a banking center or customer service.
Priority statement: disable the card first when it is missing, skip assuming that the app control replaces reporting an actual theft.
Wire Transfer Versus External Transfer
A wire is not the same as the personal external-transfer feature.
First Merchants publishes domestic and international wire services through its treasury-management materials. Incoming domestic wires use the bankโs routing number and the beneficiaryโs account number; the bank also states that it participates in the SWIFT network for international wires.
External transfers, by contrast, are described as personal online-banking transfers between eligible accounts at different institutions and may require small-deposit verification.
Use this decision table:
| Need | Likely route |
| Move money between your First Merchants accounts | Internal transfer |
| Link your account at another U.S. bank | External transfer |
| Receive payroll | Direct deposit |
| Receive a domestic wire | Published incoming wire instructions |
| Send money to a known person | Zelle may be available |
| Pay a bill | Bill Pay |
Fees, limits and availability may vary by account, transaction and region. Confirm the terms shown by First Merchants before authorizing a wire or other time-sensitive transfer.
Wires can be difficult to reverse once processed. Verify recipient instructions independently through a known contact channel, particularly when payment details arrive by email.
When a Transfer or Card Action Looks Wrong
Pause before repeating it.
Check:
- The active First Merchants account.
- The transfer type.
- The sending and receiving accounts.
- Whether the item is pending.
- Whether a cutoff or non-business day applies.
- Whether external-account verification completed.
- Whether a debit-card control or alert caused the result.
- Whether the recipient instructions changed unexpectedly.
Contact the bank when an unfamiliar transfer appears, a card transaction was not authorized or wire instructions may have been altered.
First Merchants maintains a Security Center and a separate fraud-reporting page. Its contact page lists 1.800.205.3464 for customer assistance.
Do not disclose login credentials or authentication codes to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
The Electronic Fund Transfer Act and Regulation E are the principal U.S. consumer rules associated with many electronic-fund-transfer protections. The specific handling of a disputed transaction depends on its type, timing and account circumstances, so report unauthorized activity promptly through the bankโs established channel.

074900657.
Where do I set up an external account?
In the mobile instructions, open More, choose Pay & Transfer, then select Manage External Accounts.
Why did First Merchants send two small deposits?
They are used to verify an external account before transfers can begin. Enter the amounts only inside the bankโs verification workflow.
How long are eStatements available?

Does turning off my debit card stop subscriptions?
No. First Merchants says previously established recurring debit-card payments may continue even while most other transactions are denied.
